First Stop - Ubud - (circa 1997)

Driving in Bali - is - well how should I say;  not the calming experience, that is, the island itself.

Making your way out of the Kuta/Legion region, is not for the faint hearted.  However, once you develop nerves of steel, grown accustomed to driving etiquette, you are on your way.

All that tooting, that is going on, is actually very polite, once you learn what it is about.  A gentle 'toot-toot' as you drive past someone, is to make them aware you are coming.  A lot of people walk by the side of the road and it is a courtesy, to warn you are approaching, so they don't step out onto the road.

Our first stop was Ubud.  We stayed near the Campuan bridge and almost opposite the temple.  In a lovely complex, traditional in design, down a little laneway, ran by Ketut and her artist husband, Nyoman Pageh at Pager Bungalows.  I can't give you a website, because there isn't one, but you can call 975 433.

This is a lovely, family run place, about four basic but clean rooms and now two beautifully appointed rooms that look down to the river.  Back then the original rooms were $17.00AUD a night and I don't think they have gone up in price since 1997.  Like with most places, they include breakfast.

My experience of staying at Pager Bungalows, was a beautiful, heart warming introduction to Bali, the people, culture, their kindness, food and probably the reason I am still going back.
